episodes. The topics vary, and may include cipher
machines, the history of cryptology, the
technology and science behind it, historical
events, from wars to espionage, that were
influenced by cryptography, making and breaking
codes, books and websites. We encourage the
listener to explore the fascinating world of

Oberman talks about his father, Prof. Dr. Ir.
Roelof Oberman, who started in 1935 as engineer
at the Dutch state company Post Telegraphy and
Telephone (PTT). From 1946 until 1957, Roelof
Oberman was head of the switching department of
the PTT Laboratory, where he developed the Colex
and Ecolex one-time tape Telex crypto systems,
and the Erolet random noise key generator.
Oberman filed more than ninety patents, including
some sixty cryptopatents. From 1958, Philips USFA
took over the crypto developments from the PTT.
Oberman then went fulltime to the TU-Delft until
1980.

FRITZ MENZER AND THE SG-41 by Dr. CAROLA DAHLKE 28 Mar 2024
Dr. Carola Dahlke is the curator of the
department of Computer Science and Cryptology at
the Deutsches Museum in Munich. In 2018, she
embarked on a years long mission to unravel the
mysteries of the SG-41 cipher machine and its
creator Fritz Menzer. Although less known than
the Enigma machine, the SG-41 was far more secure,
yet never came into mass production. Carola
talks about the machine, its history, preserving
the SG-41 and the seven-part video series on
Fritz Menzer.
